Tarpon Lightning Strikes

Naples fishing is sometimes all about the tarpon. They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place, but it did for twelve-year-old Sean P. and his father, Larry. Last year, when this dynamic duo went out fishing with me, Sean experienced a double-header tarpon haul. One fish weighed 60 pounds, and the other weighed 80. On this year’s trip, Sean struck silver again, with an even heftier haul.

We were fishing the back bay, using cut catfish on the bottom. The young angler was using an eight-foot rod with 40-pound test line. Sean hooked a big tarpon and fought it for twenty minutes. The fish hit the scales at 105 pounds. The second giant was even larger and had more fight. It took Sean a full hour to bring in the 120-pound brute.

Admittedly, Sean is your average pre-teen angler. He’s patient, and he has some fishing experience under his belt. Even so, Naples tarpon fishing can be rewarding for practically anyone, especially with the help of experienced fishing guides who know the area well.
